I just wanted to take a moment to write that Dr. Who is an amazing show. You may have heard of it as this long-running British sci-fi  TV show with insanely devoted fans. Still, its really good. Just subscribe to Netflix or check out a dvd from your local library. I started with the new version that began in 2005 starring Charles Eccleston and Billie Piper. I’m almost done with season 2 and how it fills my heart with warmth! Its more than sci-fi, its really about people and life. I’m so glad that I gave it a chance 🙂

I just finished episode 10 and jeez, this show is just too gorgeous! It makes my heart ache! And though the focus of the show has been the story a bit more than the characters its nice to slowly learn and care more for them, just like how Eun Oh and Arang are naturally growing closer. However, episodes 9-10 slowed down and gave more insight into what makes them tick. Eun Oh isn’t just a typical cold kdrama lead with a hidden fuzzy side. He’s actually never really had a mother. He did everything he could to be her son, but she was too wrapped up in her pain to be there for him. Despite, her huge failings he feels guilty and wants to give her the peaceful life she never had. Eun Oh’s true nature is generous. Even  after finding out his time with Arang  would be short, instead of shutting her out he wants be good to her now and then send her to heaven.

Last fall Flower Boy Ramyun Shop premiered and I totally missed it. I think I was watching Baby-faced Beauty and Can You Hear My Heart?  Despite, the love fest going on at dramabeans I felt that I had too much on my plate to start another drama. Also, Jung Il Woo is very pretty, but not my type. Anyhoo, I finally decided to give it a go and BEHOLD, it lives up to the hype! It’s hilarious, zany, warmhearted, clever, has interesting people, and has TWO guys for me to drool over! That would be Park Min Woo and Lee Ki Woo. No, wait. Chi Soo’s friend at the coffee shop is pretty adorable. Oh, and his friend with the long hair is pretty too…Disregard all that. The show is still good despite being loaded with eye-candy. I just finished episodes 3-4 and feel a little disappointed that each episode is only about 45 minutes. Kdramas usually run about 10 minutes too long, but this is too short! Then again it’s probably better this way wanting more.

It’s been awhile since I’ve posted about Arang and the Magistrate (AATM), but I’m still really enjoying it. The story is awesomely complex, suspenseful, and lots of fun.  Some people complain about lack of romance, but I’m happy the story is taking center stage. My last drama-crack was Big. I cared tons for  the couple, but the plot…not so much. If AATM’s story holds up till the end I’ll be so glad to have another drama on my shortlist of those with a good story. Don’t get me wrong. Lots of dramas are entertaining, but not many have anything important to say. Not many really make you think and struggle. So far the writers have paced the drama very well and soon enough we’ll get to lovey-dovey territory. Plus, Jun Ki and Min Ah have unmistakable chemistry (*sobs). When the drama goes there we’ll appreciate it all the more. By the way, Jun Ki should wear this IN EVERY EPISODE. Click the read more link for the larger, more glorious picture 🙂

If there was one movie you’d grab before running out of your burning home which would it be? Mine would be The Apartment (1960) starring Jack Lemmon and Shirley MacLaine. It’s a New York love story about two nobodies working in a building filled with thousands of employees. C.C. Baxter (Lemmon) is a simple insurance paper pusher who is duped into lending his apartment to one of his many bosses. Soon all of his bosses need his place to “change into a tuxedo” and before long he realizes it’s actually for their extramarital affairs. C.C. doesn’t want to rock the boat nor lose his job and lets them. He even has to schedule a day to rest at home with a raging head cold! Also, C.C. has an adorable crush on Fran Kubelik (MacLaine), a elevator operator in his office building. She is sweet, funny and polite to C.C., who obviously goes out of his way to ride her elevator each day. He finally gets a date with her, but she stands him up. Then the poor guy finds out she is dating the top boss and he brought her to C.C.’s apartment! When Fran realizes her boyfriend has strung her along and used her like a cheap mistress she attempts suicide there. C.C. saves her life and has to cover for the boss. They have to spend Christmas in his apartment. Does this sound messy? Sure, but being made in 1960 they keep the sleaze to a minimum. C.C. and Fran don’t even kiss, much less sleep together. However they become friends and fall in love without prior carnal knowledge of each other. Can you imagine that!

Where this movie really gets me is the characters and dialogue. Lemmon’s 1,000 facial expressions and Shirley’s subdued agony are beautiful to watch. You feel the pain of C.C.’s crush and Fran’s humiliation. And they’re wonderful together. Every smile exchanged between them makes you smile. Each joke whether clever or corny is unpretentious. I love the line “Twas the night before Christmas and all through the house not a creature was stirring..Nothing, No Action, Dullsville!” There’s so much more.  I watch this about every year and it hasn’t gotten old yet.
